Every year, as part of my curriculum, we do a self-portrait. It’s been an interesting journey since I have students from kindergarten to grade three.  I get to see their progression each year.  This year, I was ultra impressed by my second-grade students.

I always have students do a self-portrait on the own using a mirror first. This way I can see what they know already and what we need to focus on.  No matter what age, students always put their eyes way high on their head, make a very skinny neck, and make stringy hair.

Then we go into fractions and we practice drawing a face using fractions as a guide.

Some kids get it, some don’t.  No worries.  They are in second grade.

And then we recreate our faces on a big paper.  This year I had my kids color them with chalk.

I love this last one, how he used complementary colors.  It really pops. Can’t wait to display a few of these at the art show.
