This is probably the hardest lesson I’ve taught for Kindergarten: the snowman.  You think it’s going to be easy, but it turns out this was quite challenging.  Who knew?

Here’s the thing. I hate crafts.  They remind me of working on an assembly line.  And I’ve done this.  I used to work on an assembly line in high school, with my mom, to make money for a car and then college.  Crafts seem like this to me.  Unless you tweak here and there, it’s basically the same thing over and over again.  Mass produced stuff that’s not that great to begin with. No thanks.

I don’t precut anything in my class outside of strips of paper.  My kids do it all.  Yes, it’s tough at times, but the end results all demonstrate that the kids make their work, not me.

Alright.  So step one was to trace cups to make circles.  This was a challenge for many reasons.  Nevermind kids had to be able to write their name and count the correct amount of letters in their name.  Then the cutting, gluing. Then the writing of their letters in the circles. Then the cutting of the nose and branches, then the making of the scarf and hat.  And don’t forget the face.  Phew!  My lovely teaching assistant, Sareen, and I couldn’t hide our amusement and surprise every day after school. We both thought this was going to be a quick lesson.  Now we know.  IMG_2724

They are so dang cute!  Lopsided ones, floppy hats, crazy noses and all.  All in all, this lesson is a keeper.  Very fun to do during the holidays and teaches lots of skills too. Happy holidays!
